THE POWER OF QUIET
Resource: Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain
By: Ayla Khosroshahi
Quiet is underestimated. Quiet is powerful. Quiet is true. In a world in which we are all expected to say the right thing at the right time, it’s nice to know that sometimes that right thing is saying nothing at all. Quiet teaches us that sometimes to be “on” we have to turn “off”. Quiet reminds us that without self-awareness we can’t be accountable to how we show up.
As an introvert, who lives a life of an extrovert, I found this book fascinating, liberating, and empowering — and I think that it will help you do better by thinking better.
My main MINDSHIFT moments:
- Flip The Narrative
It’s less about what you are not, and more about what you are. It is less about the narrative that you sing about your anxiety, frustration, fears, and more about understanding where your power comes from and how you access it. When you flip your narrative you see potential instead of roadblock, and you see opportunity instead of challenge. By focusing on what you are, instead of what you are not, you embrace your whole self in a more supportive, empowering, and productive way.
Ask yourself: How can I flip the narrative on my strengths and weaknesses? By empowering my strengths can I better support my weaknesses? How can I fuel these strengths? Make a list of things you can do.
- Find Your Flow
Understanding what makes you centered, balanced, and grounded will support you to be productive and perform better. In this way, you learn how to optimise who you are and live as your best self. You capitalize on what works for you to enhance your creativity, your thinking, and your energy. You can set up your ecosystem to support this growth. Find your flow. And cultivate it to propel you forward.
Ask yourself: When do I feel most centred? Grounded? Balanced? What are the things that I have done to support these states? How have I set up my day? How have I set up my space? What are some things that I can add to my routine to optimize my performance in this way – think about it in terms of your mind + body + space.
- Permission to be you. Guilt free.
When you figure out how you tick, and what makes you tick better, you are allowed to support that — guilt free. This means that if after a board meeting, office party, networking or any other social event you need to be alone for a couple hours, that is okay. You don’t have to be “on” all the time. Find a balance in the way you challenge yourself to keep growing, but respect your boundaries that keep you healthy and thriving.Ask yourself: What are the things you know that make you feel healthier and happier, but you feel guilty asking for? How can you reframe your thinking? How can you communicate them better to your partners so they understand your needs and why?
As an introvert you need to recharge with some alone time. It doesn’t mean you can’t be a social butterfly, present in front of large audiences or be a great leader — you can do all that and more. But it does mean that to do all that without burning yourself out, you need to strike a balance so your energy and insights are regenerated.
Don’t fight against your need for quiet. Don’t be ashamed when you want to stay home after a social engagement. Don’t feel guilty if you need an hour to yourself when you get home from work. It’s time to accept your whole self, work on your strengths and learn how to help yourself perform better by understanding how you tick, and empowering that part of you. Reframe the idea of quiet. See the power and wisdom that comes from introspectiveness to help you do better by thinking better.
